The Forbury Park meeting opened in sunny weather with a cold wind blowing. Considering that two postponements had been experienced, the attendance was better than expected. The Club had taken a great deal of trouble with the track, various expedients being availed of to dry out the clay, with the result that it was much better than anybody had a right to expect after the flooding it was subjected to. The only soft spots in evidence existed close in to the rails. The racing was close and in many cases exciting.

A big field in the Bayfield Handicap got away fairly well, Don Wilkes showing the way to Wee Patch, while General Derby was close up, Arran Lad coming fast from the rear. With a lap to go General Derby was well elear from Wee Patch and Lady Elwood, while Arran Lad was gaining fast on the leaders. At the far turn, Wee Patch was beaten and Arran Lad was disputing second place with Lady Elwood. General Derby (J. McLennan) was first into the atraight, but he broke half way down. Running on, Lady Elwood took command, and striding away, C. R Hadfield's bay mare, Lady *EI wood, El Carbine—Clarewood (owner), won by six lengths from Bon Sonty (R Humphreys), who beat Ladycliff by half a length for second place. Then in close order came General Derby, Arran Lad and Wee Patch. The popular selection, Mat Patch (J. Bryce Jnr.), was never seen. Arran Lad went a good race but could not quite see the distance out. T. Annett, rider of Arran lad, was fined £2 for talking to an outsider on the track. The trainer and owner have been connected with a number of good winners in the South, including Adair Massey and others. Times: 4min 15 l-ssecs; 4min 3 4-osecs; 4min 13secs. ILe field comprised.—Mat Patch, Ladycliff, Arran Lad and Bon Sonty ( coupled ), Lady Elwood, General Derby, Young Tom, Stone Ginger, Reform, Carlene, Wee Patch, Jim Russell, Don Massey, Ocean Grove, Erlstroke, James Maddison and Dan Mac (coupled), Kentucky Moor. Marvin Fox Trot and Master Robbins (coupled), Don Wilkes, Ora Jay, Wharaetoa, Swiftline, Fancy Maid, Bob Wilkes, Tiaki, Bondo, Dunnegan and Master Peter.

Prior to the start of the Domain Handicap Miss Adonis reared over and was brought back to the paddock. Forbury was lame after his preliminary and was withdrawn. King Copa did not leave the mark and Ventura. Junior Girl and Fireman were very slow to move. Barcelona shot out and held a long lead at the stand from Wee Daphne. With a lap to go Barcelona was still well clear, but was tiring. Then came Quiver, Wee Daphne and Wild Pointer in close company, while Mother Machree was doing the best of the others. Barcelona led into the straight, but A. Russell’s bay gelding, Quiver by Wildwood Jnr.—Lady Child, 4 years, (J. J. Kennerley) at once took command to win by four lengths, Barcelona (J. N. Clarke' beating Wild Patch (F. Holmes) by nearly two lengths for second place. Mother Machree was a length away fourth, then came Jean Mac, Wee Daphne and Hylas. The winner is a useful pacer and was recently narrowly beaten by Transport at the Amberley meeting .t Riccarton. He was capably driven by the Australian remaman. The runner-up, Barce fay Cana de Oro—Olive Wood, wani

out lame. He is the best of the few descendants of the defunct American horse yet seen on the race track here. Times: 4min Isec; 4min 2 l-osecs; 4min 1 1-ssecs. The field comprised.—Barcelona, Quiver, Wild Pointer, Glen Wilkes, King Ingoda, Wee Daphne, Edwin Harwin and Hylas (coupled), Miss O’Neill, Jean Mac, Lucy Harold, Bricklayer, Cliffeton Chimes, Junior Girl, Rollicking Bells, Fireman and Peterville (coupled), Kossolian, Ventura, Mother Machree, Our Nurse, Wallace Dillon.

At the start of the Innovation Handicap Helenwood, Claude Alto, Admiral Derby and Wallacetown missed. At the stand Lottie Direct, Tipperary and Alpha Wilkes were going well. Lottie Direct drew out along the back in the second lap. Lottie Direct was attended by Peter Swift, who led into the straight. Bundaberg took command going to the back from Helenwood, with Lottie Direct next. Holding his own over the last round, R. Mugford's Bundaberg by Bon Homme—Victor Hugo mare (J. Bryce', beat Helenwood (W. Lowe) by two lengths with Lottie Direct (Roberts) a length and a half away third; then came Alpha Wilkes and Peter Swift. The southern representative Wallacetown lost ground at the start and dropped to the rear, but was close to the leaders at the finish. Helenwood trotted a good race despite several bad breaks and would probably have won had she kept down. Admiral Derby trotted badly and put in two bad breaks. Times: 4min 59secs; smin 7 1-5 secs; omin 8 4-ssecs. The field comprised.— Helenwood, Peter Swift, Bundaberg, Tipperary, Wallacetown, Admiral Derby, Claude Alto, Lottie Direct, Alpha Wilkes.

When the signal was given in the Prince of Wales Handicap Taraire and Emperor galloped off and lost a lot of ground. Pedro Pronto showed the way out of the straight from Jack Arrah, Lady Joan and Peter Mac, while Paul Dufault and Albert Cling were away in the rear. In the back stretch Peter Mac broke and was pulled up. Entering the second lap Pedro Pronto just led Jack Arrah and Lady Joan, with Tnx Pointer and Taraire in close attendance from Grand Denver, who was pacing very unkindly. Leading into the last lap. Pedro Pronto was beaten. Going to the far turn Jack Arrah took up the running from Taraire and Lady Joan, with Trix Pointer and Grand Denver handy, and Willie Lincoln closing up fast. Jack Arrah led into the home stretch, but immediately compounded, leaving Taraire to go on from Lady Joan. Staying on in great style R. Morten’s roan gelding, Taraire, by Four Chimes—Muricata (J. Bryce, 1 , strode away to win easily by four lengths from Lady Joan (R. Holmes Jnr.). Willie Lincoln (J. Clarke) was two lengths off third, a length in front of Grand Denver (Hendrickson) ; then came Jack Arrah and Trix Pointer. Despite losing a lot of ground, Taraire paced a great race in accounting for his seventh race of the current season. Lady Joan travelled solidly throughout, while Willie Lincoln’s come back was unexpected in many expert quarters. Trix Pointer was always handy and did well throughout. Times: 4min 42 2-osecs; 4min 45aecs; 4min 41 4-ssecs. The field comprised.—Taraire, Pedro Pronto, Grand Denver, Emperor, Lady Joan, and Trix Pointer (coupled), Willie Lincoln, Paul Dufault, Peter Mac, Jack Arrah and Albert Cling.

Prior to the start of the Beach Handicap Fernmoor fell and then refused to start when the signal was given. Harry Audubon began badly. In the back straight for the first time, Quickmatch tangled and was pulled up. Passing the stand for the first time, Walroon led from Golden Nut and Dolly Dillon. At the back Golden Nut broke and lost hia chance and Plywood followed suit when going well. In the second lap Fashion Queen took command from Dolly Dillon, Walroon, Bing Boy, Harry Audubon and Linden. With a lap to go Fashion Queen was closely followed by Bing Boy, linden and Walroon. The order was the same to the far turn, with Linden always moving up. At the home turn, Linden got a run on the rails. In the straight O. Hooper’s Linden, by Tohu (Owner), drew out and won by two lengths from Fashion Queen (J. R. McMurray). Bing Boy (Wallace) was half a length off third. Walroon was fourth and then came Brown Chequer. Times: 4min 43 l-ssecs; 4min 43 4-ssecs; 4min 44secs. Many onlookers thought the run on the rails won the race for Linden, but he finished full of running, while Fashion Queen just stalled off Bing Boy. The winner returned a double-figure reward. The trainer of the second horse must hold a record for gaining second place in the south for the past throe years. The field comprised.—Harry Audubon (Tomkinson), Fernmoor, Lenamhor, Golden Nut, Plywood, linden, Fashion Queen, Walroon, Dolly Dillon, Kilmarnock, Quickmatch, Brown Chequer and Bing Boy.

In the St. Clair Handicap The Squire and Count Dee began badly, but soon settled down. Admiral Derby led The Squire, Solace and Darkest down the straight, while Dixie Mac left her feet early. Before the second lap commenced Solace left his feet and dropped back. In the second lap The Squire tangled and lost his position, leaving Admiral Derby in the lead, while Darkest, with Mangoutu, were moving up. Count Dee was showing the way with a lap to go from Admiral Derby and Mangoutu. Going down the back First Fashion met with interference, Kennerley being thrown from the sulky, but he was not hurt. The occurrence was accidental. Count Dee (A. Butterfield) led into the home stretch, but D. Archers Mangoutu by Galindo-Espanita (C. Donald), overhauled him and won by four lengths, Darkest (McGregor), being three lengths off third. Bundaberg (penalised 24yds) was next. Great interest was taken in the first appearance at Forbury of Dixie Mac, but the Victorian mare could not do better than finish in fifth place. Mangoutu, who does not always trot steadily, is also noted as being unlucky and recorded a popular win. Clonmel and Sunny Jim (recently from Australia) were never prominent. Times: 4min 54secs; 4min 55 2-ssecs; 4min 57 l-ssecs. The field comprised.—Count Dee, Sunny Jim, Dixie Mac Bundaberg, Mangoutu, The Squire, Darkest, Clonmel, Solace, Pieter Timmerman, Admiral Derby, First Fashion and Merry Bingen.

In the Renown Handicap. Peter King led out from Donside and Dalnahine. The trio were well clear of Bonny Logan. The order was the same at the far turn for the last time round, where Dalnahine and Bonny Logan closed on Donside. Peter King led into the straight, Donside breaking and retiring. In the run home, W. H. Norton’s Bonny Logan, by Logan Pointer— Bonilene (F. Holmes) got up to beat Peter King (G. 8. Smith) by half a head. Dalnahinq, (B. Jarden) was six lengths off third. Edair was fourth and Donside fifth. It was a very fine race. Many spectators held the opinion that Peter King won, but the man in the box was really the only one in a position to make a definite announcement. The Southlander Donside paced a fine race, but failed for condition over the last furlong. The field comprised.—Peter King, Bonny Logan and Sir Henry (coupled), Adair, Donside, Dalnahine, Royal Step, Jane Wilkes, Stockade.

Disaster struck the southern admirers of Downcast in the Flying Handicap, as the chestnut gelding stood on the mark and lost many lengths. Olive Huon also got away badly. J. Henderson’s Bon Wilkes by Marvin Wilkes—Embrace (W. Robertson), jumped away alone leading all the way and won by four lengths from Ben O’Hau (J. McLennan), who was luck to be placed half a head in front of Fashion Queen (J. Walsh) at the finish. Norma Dillon was fourth and Downcast next. The last named put up a good fight for second place, but tired after losing much ground. The field comprised.—Fashion Queen, Idris, Downcast. Olive Huon, Bon Wilkes, Ben O’Hau, Norma Dillon, First Toll. There was a demonstration from the crowd when Ben O’Hau was placed second over Fashion Queen, but again the judge was in the best person to know.

QUESTION OF CONTROL. (Per United Press Association). ..UMARU, May 10. EXECUTIVE RESIGNS. DUNEDIN, May 10. A general meeting of the Otago Boxing Association was held to-night to consider what steps should be taken in view of the disqualification of the executive by the New Zealand Boxing Council. The president and executive decided to resign in a body and a new chairman was appointed for the meeting. A provisional committee was then set up from members of the Association not concerned in the disqu&lication, and the meeting then authorised this provisional committee to apply for re-affiliation to the Boxing Council.

FOOTBALL

SATURDAY’S GAMES. The three first grade matches set down for Rugby Park on Saturday promise to produce a continuation of the good standard of football that has been in evidence so far. Those old rivals. Star and Blues, will fight their battles all over again on the No. 1 area, and they should be a good draw, particularly as the Invercargill Club, which sustained some heavy losses last year, has recruited one or two promising players since the start of the present season. Pirates will play Waikiwi, who scored such a convincing win against Bluff last Saturday and there are indications that the suburbanites will put up a good showing against their formidable rivals. The rapidly improved Marist side will meet Bluff, which if it can get some of its injured men right again, will take a bit of beating. SCHOOL MATCHES. On Saturday a match will be played between the Middle School senior fifteen and a fifteen comprising boys who are overweight for the schools competition who have been coached by Brother Anastasius with a view to the possible inclusion of some of them in the primary school representatives. A match will also be played between the senior fifteens of the South and Marist schools. Both matches will be played on the Biggar street grounds. NEW ZEALAND UNION. (Per United Press Association). WELLINGTON, May 10. The first meeting of the newly-elected Management Committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union was held last night. Mr S. Deans was elected chairman, and Messrs Hornig and Deans were appointed delegates to the Olympic Council.
