The steamer Stephen will shortly arrive from London with material for two new cables for the Pacific Cable Board—one for the Southport-Sydney line and the ether for the Suva-Auckland section. As the routes have already been surveyed the work ioi Laying the cables will be started shortly 'efter the vessel’s arrival. j Mr Milward states that a new type of cable is now being tested which is expected :to increase the carrying capacity at least ! eight times compared with what is possible at present.
