BOOKMAKING
FARMER FINED. An adjourned charge of bookmaking at Pine Bush Races, preferred against John Lake, was dealt with at a sitting of the Invercargill Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning before Mr G. Cruickshank, S.M. The case had previously been adjourned for legal argument. Mr Hall-Jones, counsel for tho defence, said that the defendant was a small farmer and a returned soldier. He came cf a very respectable family and there was absolutely nothing against him. The defence admitted that on the day in question the defendant had taken an interest in some form of betting, but they contended that it was not bookmaking. The defence would be that backing one horse against another was not bookmaking. The Inspector said that the evidence, showed that no fewer than three bets had been made with the accused on the race. The Magistrate said that there was no question that defendant must be convicted. In answer to the Bench it was stated that defendant had a trainer’s license, which he would lose. A fine of £2 was imposed.
