RECKLESS TAXI DRIVER

FLYING MOTORIST FINED £lO. (Per United Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, April 27. The motor fatality which occurred in the early hours of the morning of March 8 on Beach road, Kaiapoi, when Kenneth Edward Manttaa was killed by the overturning of a taxicab, was recalled in the Magistrate's Court to-day when Allan Cordner Midgely (taxi-driverl was charged with driving a motor-car through Cathedral Square at an excessive speed and in a dangerous manner. The offence was stated to have taken place shortly before midnight, which was before the fatal accident. Senior Sergeant Lewin said that defendant had driven in the Square at about 40 miles an hour. There were some women passengers who screamed when the taxi missed a standing cab by inches only. It swept round the corner towards Worcester street going east with the two off wheels in the air. Between Dalgety A Co.’s, Ltd., building and the Government offices there were some trailers, and these also were nearly struck. Had anyone been in the vicinity they would have been assuredly killed. “There is only one way to treat you,” said Mr Wyvern Wilson, 8.M., "you will be fined £lO and costs.”
