THE DELUGE

A SWAGGER DROWNED DAMAGE TO TAIERI BRIDGES (Per United Press Association.) DUNEDIN, April 27. A tragedy of the floods was revealed at Waikouaiti at the inquest on an unknown swagger, about 55. The evidence showed that a tent was seen alongside the Waikouaiti River on Sunday. When the spot was visited on Monday it had been feet deep under water, and 150 yards below the body was found. The river’s rise was so rapid that there was no chance of escape. The inquest was adjourned for possible identification. The flood position is much improved now that the Leith is returning to normal level. Bridges have suffered serious structural damage. The Taieri County Council engineer considers that a Government grant or loan will be needed for the restoration of the Taieri bridges.
