The Commissioners of the Rural Bank sought £1,000,000 loan to inaugurate the activities of the bank in the direction of assisting the man on the land. The public subscribed £4,000,000, but the Commissioners are accepting only £1,000,000. Mr Oakes has issued a warning that the Government possesses power to prevent the collection of funds for the Irish envoys and says he is taking steps immediately to stop the campaign. BRISBANE, April 27.
Twelve buildings, including the School of Arts in Morgan street, the main thoroughfare of Mount Morgan, were destroyed by fire at midnight on Wednesday. The damage amounts to £35,000. The fire covered a frontage of 115yds and was prevented from spreading by a willing bucket brigade. The town has no fire brigade.
