SATISFACTORY POSITION. MEAT AND WOOL PRICES MAINTAINED (Special to the Times). CHRISTCHURCH, February 19. Referring to the Home markets for New Zealand produce, Mr Alex Boyle, managing director of the firm of Pyne, Gould, Guinnes, Ltd., who recently returned from a visit to the Old Country, said the cabled announce meat in to-day’s papers to the effect that North Island lamb had made 13d per pound, “on hooks” at Smithfield and Down lambs 14d, made it appear quite obvious that New Zealand lamb was now a feature of the London meat supply. He considered that having established that position, it would continue to maintain it for many years to come and that it was now getting more or less of a fixed value. Unless there was an enormous over-supply, which did not seem likely, and unless Australia and other countries brought their flocks up to a better standard, the present good prices should be maintained. Both wether and ewe mutton had realised higher prices than were anticipated. It had been thought that with the extraordinarily good crors of roots in England last season a good deal of fattening would have been done, but the farmers had not been able to utilise the crops to the best advantage. Discuss» the wool market, Mr Boyle said that it appeared that wool would have a settled tendency for some time to come. There appeared to be only one thing that might d»a turb prices seriously, and that was the continued unsettled state of Europe, but there was no shadow of doubt that every country wanted wool. The flocks of the world had greatly diminished and as soon : s trade became settled again, it seemed to him that there would be good prices for all classes of wool and an improved market for crossbred wool was practically certain to come about.
