The Cheviot Racing Club came to town to-day and held its annual meeting on the C.J.C. track at Riccarton, where only the inside enclosure and the big electric tote were in use. Despite the threatening weath- • er and heavy rain in the country districts, only a few light showers fell at Riccarton. making very'little difference in the state of the going. The surprise of the day was the success of Petunia in the Cheviot Cup. The son of Absurd followed up his wins at Trenthani and Wingatui by tackling the longer distance of ten furlongs to win comfortably in the fast time of 2min 6sec. He was going on at the finish and never looked like getting beaten. After the Cheviot Cup the trainer-owner (R. W. King* was asked to explain the running of Red Gown, and his explanation was accepted as satisfactory.

Hereweare (L. Smith) made the running in the Brooklands Jumpers' Hat from Brown Willie, with First Aid leading the others. At the home turn the field closed up and Votist ran to the front, with First Aid next. In the run home First Aid, by Cronstadt— Lady Urgent, got up and beat Votist (Humphries* by a head, with Brown Willie (Wormaid' four lengths away. A. McMullan came up from Gore to ride the winner, who is trained by J. J. Lewis (Ashburton I. The field comprised Firfl Aid, Brown Willie, All Serene, Votist, Indus, Hereweare, Missouri.

A fine field of twenty-six pacers filed out to try conclusions on the classic Riccarton track. Getting out smartly Nibbidard, byCoal King—Lady Teddington (A. G. Wilson *. was never headed and won easily from Leading Lady (J. .Anderson*. Dusky Locanda (W. Warrem was close up. The exSouthlander, Eric Rothschild, was fourth. The winner was trained and driven by the Well-known mentor of the champion trotter, Ret a Peter. The time was 3min 57 sec. Leading Lady was favourite, with the winler second in demand.

Great interest was taken in the Trial Stakes, by reason of the fact that three promising two-year-olds were engaged in the race—Gay Juliet, Parody and The Polymnian (brother to The Cypher). Prior to the start Delia, owned by W. Crossan, bol--?d into the trees and lost her rider. AfterWards she ran wild on the outside in the lace. Gay Juliet, by Gay Lad—Gargaron (J. Hare* got out well and led from Parody (Bedford’, while The Polymnian (C. Emer»on), 84lbs overweight, was slow on his legs. In the straight the rider of Parody was seen to have lost one of his stirrup irons. In a good finish Mrs Tahu Rhodes’s Gay Juliet beat Parody by a head, with The Polymnian half a length away third. The last named made up a lot of ground in the home stretch. The eight old horses were badly beaten by the youngsters. Had Parody’s rider been an experienced rider he probably would have taken his other foot >ut of the iron and won. The field com>ris#*d: Gay Juliet. The Polymnian. Parody, Carette. Orient, Swallowflight. Bebeform, Message Boy, Lord Symons, Delia, Cup Day.

There was very keen wagering on the Cheviot Cup. the four topweights being •olidly backed. Petunia at once ran to the Front, followed by Castellan. The field closed up at the turn, with Petunia still in front from Castellan and Red Gown. In the run home, Petunia, by Absurd—Bronze (R. Coveney), held her own and won by three lengths from Some Kid (F. C. Porter), writh Castellan (C. Emerson) two lengths off third. At *he home turn Amendment broke his leg and had to be destroyed. The field compris?d: Castellan. Some Kid, Grim Joke, Red Gown, Petunia, Amendment.

In the Mina Handicap Bon Spec, who looked an improved horse since he raced in Invercargill, was a solid favourite. Bon Spec was first to show out, but Kilfane was prominent round the turn to the distance, where hr faded out. Bon Spec, by Boniform -Signal (E. Lowe), sprinted out and won by two lengths from Wink IP. Keene). Brackenfield (Weaver) was half a length away third and Bonny Mac was fourth. It looked as if Bonny Mac was really third. The field comprised: Bon Spec, Wink, Kilfane, Bonny Mac, Lord Leslie. Prolilinian, Prosperity, Gossard, Brackenfield.

In the Domett Handicap, Distance Shot, The Reaver and Balefire were prominent to ♦he straight from Goldspinner and Kukume. Distant Shot had enough at the distance and Samum got knocked back, when racing up to the front. Kukume, by Martian— Persian Lilac (E. Ludlow, drew out at the distance and won by two lengths from Madam Chiron fD. Cotton . with Samum (Porter a length and a half away, just in front of Balefire. The winner ran prominently but. unsuccessfully at Dunedin. Samum was unlucky and otherwise must at least have peen second. The field comprised. The Reaver, Dianella, Kukume, Goldspinner, Samum, Madam Chiron, Distant Shot, Bale fire.

A dozen pacers contested the Spotewood Trot, Eulius leading round to the straight where he was tackled by Royal Oak and Eric Rothschild. In the run home W Smiths Royal Oak, by Advance—Veronel (owner), beat Eric Rothschild (W. Harris) by four lengths, with Eulius a length away third. Then came Prince Burlington The winner, who, at one time, was very erratic, now racer well for his new owner. The nnner-up used to race in Southland, rankm a son of Harold Rothschild—Eva. He

was bred at Lumsden, and for some time was trained by J. A. McFadan. He has now developed into a useful horse. The times were: 4.45 3-5. 4.46 4-5 and 4.47 2-5. The field comprised: Leila Denver, Royal Oak, Gwenchild, Ivy Irvington, Appleshaw, Not Out. Eric Rothschild, Prince Burlington, Eulius, Logan Tree, Tydol and Melisande.

I For the Mackenzie Handicap, Will Oak- ' land was in hot demand, while Royal Mac, Barmaid and Bonny Mac had followings. Jazz and Will Oakland led the way to the straight. Striding away from the distance Will Oakland (G. Young) won easily from Bonny Mac (R. Coveney), who came fast from the rear and cut Jazz (C. Emerson) out of second place by half a length. Then came Royal Mac and Barmaid. The judge appeared to wrongly place Barmaid third, although she was a long way off. OTAHUHU TROTTING MEETING. SHEIK WINS THE CUP. i (Per United Press Association.) The upper estuary dotted with launches and dinghies presented a lively appearance on Saturday afternoon, when in cold and windy weather the Avenal Swimming Club held a meeting. No rain fell during the afternoon, but a cold westerly was blowing. The programme arranged was a long one, and evening was drawing near before proceedings closed. Mrs Lindsay, club secretary, and a busy body of assistants worked hard for the carnival, and their efforts were rewarded by the interest shown, not only by competitors, but also by the general public, who were present in large numbers. A feature appreciated by those competing was the refreshment provided for them by the club during the afternoon. The band of the Second Battalion of the Otago Regiment was present and played several well known popular selections.

As usual, the number of swimmers competing was considerably fewer than the entries made, but fairly large fields faced the starter in almost every case. Only three teams, two from the newly formed Otatara Campers’ Aquatic Club, competed in the clubs’ relay race, the home representatives getting to the tape about two or ’hree feet ahead of the Otatara “A” team. Close finishes were the order of the day. Following are the results:— Boys’ Handicap, 50 yards (14 and under):—L. Clark (4secs) 1; K. Spry (6

Four thousand watched the Wellington Provincial Championship meeting at Athletic Park to-day, in which the outsanding event was a brief appearance by Carr, the Australian champion sprinter, who ran in a heat and the final of the 120yds handicap. Prom two yards behind scratch he won his heat with five yards to snare in 11 4-ssec. The crowd rose and cheered as he cut through the opposition. He won the final easily in 12 l-ssec. His exhibition has caused redouble*! interest in the Dominion

Championship next Saturday, when he is to meet Kirksey. The Americans, Merchant and Kirksey, competed. Krogness is recovering from his injury, but was unable to take part. Merchant threw the hammer 162 ft 7in, beating McHolm’s Australasian record of 147 ft sJin. Merchant also won the shot put and javelinthrowing, but Munro beat him in the discuss casting.

Much interest centred in the 100yds championship, where Kirksey and Tracey were expected to provide a close finish. Kirksey won his heat in 10 l-ssec, with Wilson second. Tracey won the second beat in 10 2-ssec. In the final, after a perfect start, Kirksey and Wilson left the others and raced neck and neck until the last ten yards, when Kirksey drew ahead and won by inches only. Time, lOsee. Tracey was fourth. Tracey won the 220yrls easily in 22 2-5 secs, Kirksey not competing. The ladies’ races were lavishly patronised, a strong Wairarapa contingent doing well, but Miss Dawson (Wellington) won the 100yds. The men’s inter-club relay was won by Wellington, with Victoria College second.

Rose, the mile champion, lost his title unexpectedly to Griffen, a young Victoria Collegian, who also carried off the half-mile. The McVilly Challenge Shield for inter-club points was won by Wellington with 70 points. Wairarapa scored 57 and Victoria College 2'5. The meeting was one of the most successful held under the auspices of the Centre. TEMNIS. SATURDAY’S PLAY. All A grade matches were postponed to enable those selected for the interprovincial team to obtain some team practice. Most of the country- players came in and those who will form the team obtained some useful practice. B GRADE. On the Invercargill courts the Invercargill B team had a comfortable win over St. Mary’s, the score being 13 sets, 116 games to 3 sets, 68 games in favour of the home side. CRICKET. . INVERCARGILL GAMES. SATURDAY’S FIXTURES. Owing to heavy rain on Saturday morning the wickets were both sticky and the outfields slow.
