SOCIAL SERVICE,

ANNUAL RIiPORT. Tbe report to be presented at the anmra} meeting of the Southland lYesbytenan Social Service Association, refera to the valuable work done by the staff during the year. Sister Alice is still carrying on the work which she has been doing with such devotion at the CtuMion Home since the beginning of the Association. She is ably assisted by Miws V. McLauchlan and Hart. Miss Miller is doing valuable service as Matron of the Gladstone Home, and is awaited by'Miss Reid. There are at present 8 boys and 19 girls in the Cameron Home and 20 boys in the Gladstone Home. Since the resignation

of Mr A. J. Ker, as organising seerctajy, these duties have been carried out by Mr R. J. Cumming, who has done admirable work for the Association. Negotiations are in hand for the appointment of a jicrmanent

organising secretary. The Association desires to thank many generous donors for help extended to it during the year. The children were always remembered at harvest thanksgivings and a keen interest in their welfare was also taken by Bible clashes and other young |>eoples' societies. The Association has been greatly helj>ed by tbe generous action of Messrs H. and .J. Smith in giving a week’s profits, the amount handed over to the Association l>emg £255 5/7. Minor improvement# have been made at the homes, but it is not anticipated that there will be any considerable capital expenditure for the coming year. The maintenance of tbe homes and the reduction of the large debt, however, will make literal assistance necessary. Mr A F. Clark and Mr C. E. Hannah had to resign their positions on the Association, the former owing to public duties and the latter to ill-health. To both of these the thanks of the Association are due. The Association also desires to thank all others • who have done so much to brighten the liVfti of the children under the Association’s care.
