COUNTRY NEWS
DIPTON. The weather here has been exceptionally good for the time of year, warm o€j’s, and an occasional shower, tending to promote a good growth of grass which is not coming away as early as last year, but as turnips are lasting very much better than was anticipated early in the season every one has plenty of feed and stock are doing well. Everywhere one hears the farmers congratulating themselves and each other on the prospects of the certainty of a record lambing. Much adverse criticism of the Government’s proposals for disposing of under grade wheat by the adoption of the present scheme is being expressed by those who have wheat to dispose of. Farmers are expected to send wheat to store for sampling and grading, the Government to sample and grade such at the farmer’s expense. Then the Government send the wheat away and sell at the best price and this, whatever the price may be, the farmer has to accept as final. The average farmer must know the price for which he has io sell, at least an approximate price, otherwise he would prefer to sell locally at a very much lower price than he has been led to expect he would receive for the wheat under the Government’s guarantee. The Oddfellows of the Loyal Dipton Lodge held a very successful dance on Friday night last in the Dipton Hall, when the hall was comfortably filled. The catering was in the capable hands of Mr R. J. Cochrane, who supplied a dainty and appetising repast. Good music contributed to an enjoyable evening. Mr Wm. Hogarth fulfilled the duties of M.C. in his usual capable manner. The fishermen are looking forward eagerly to the opening of the season. Lines, reels, and rods are receiving attention and a good season is being looked forward to. A social in connection with the local Anglers’ Club" is to be held in the Hall on Saturday October 7, this l>eing the annual re union, and a good time is sure to be spent in speech, story and song. The annual meeting‘of the Dipton Athletic Society is to be held on Saturday, October 14, when the election of officers and arrangements for the forthcoming meeting on January 1, will be made.
