STREET BEAUTIFYING

WORK IN TAY STREET. Comparatively little has been done in Invercargill in the way of street beautifying and the streets generally bear a neglected appearance In a few instances residents have taken the matter in hand and have kept the grass plots on the roadline in front of their homes nicely trimmed. Trees have also been planted in some cases, but most of this has been accomplished by private enterprise and street beautifying has not figured very largely in the work carried out by the Corporation. A serious effort to do something in this direction is at present being made in Tay Street and if it turns out as well as it is expected, this work will probably be gradually extended to other parte of the town. The work in Tay street is now fairly well in hand. Either side of the road from Deveron to Jed streets is being put in good order preparatory to a grass plot 32 feet in width being laid down in the centre. As soon as this block is completed the block from Jed to Doon streets will be proceeded with, and later on it will be carried on a.s far as Elies Road. The width of the roadway on either side of the grass reserve will be 33 feet and this should be ample to accommodate all traffic, especially as it leads into a chain street at the Elies Road intersection. By the division of the street, the traffic will be better regulated and vehicles of all descriptions will be confined to their proper side until crossings are reached. It is not intended to plant trees or anything which will screen the traffic, but low-grow-ing flowering shrubs will serve to give the reserve the appearance of a garden plot and also to relieve the sense of bareness which such wide streets produce.
