Mr J. L. McG. Watson has left Inver cargill on a visit to Hamner. Mr D. W. McKay, who has been away at Christchurch for the last week, has returned to Invercargill. Mr C. S. Longuet has gone to Dunedin to judge the Daffodil section at the Spring Show, which is being held there to-day. Mr H. J. lieaie has been appotiited postmaster at Browns in succession to Mr A. Tull, who has resigned. Messrs S. Page, SAI., A. Torrance anij L. C. Jolly members of toe Railway Appeal Board, left by this morning's exprear for Dunedin. The many friends of Mr A. S. Holms, Waimahaka, will be pleased to learn that he is now recovered from his recent severe illness. Mr Hastings Braddcll, sub-editor of the Southland Times, has received an appointment on the editorial staff of the Hawker Bay Tribune. It is understood that Mr J. Craigic, M.P., for Timaru, who will not be a candidate at the general election, will be called to tho Upper House, telegraphs the Christchurch correspondent of the Southland Times. Mr P. O. Veale has been selected as Auckland candidate for the Rhodes Scholarship (says a Press Association, telegram). Ha is at present a master at the Boys* Grammar School. Mr F. J. RoUeston, Mayor of Timaru, and also chairman of the Harbour Board, acceded to the request of a large and influential deputation to contest the Timaru seat in the Reform interests, says a Press Association telegram. Mr W. E. Spencer, officer in charge of the school building department of the Education Department, Wellington, is expected to. arrive in Invercargill by Tuesday evening’s express. His visit is iu connection with departmental business. It is notified in the London Gazette of August 18 that the lung; has appointed Mr John Herbert Gibbs, F.ILCJSEK, to Ihj honorary surgeon dentist to his Majesty in Scotland. Tovey, after being thirteen years in | the employ of the Ashburton branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operation Association, leaves to-day for Gore (telegraphs the Christchurch correspondent of toe Southland Times). Prior to his departure from Ashburton his fellow employees at tho Farmers’ Co-op. made him the recipient of a handsome travelling rug. Subsequently a large surprise party visited his residence and presented Mrs Tovey with a gold brooch. Mr Tovey received another surprise when he was invited to attend a farewell social in the Theatre Royal, where a large and representative gathering assembled and more presents were given to him. Various speakers referred to Mr Tovey’s many years’ valuable service as a member of the old Ashburton Brass Band and the pre cut First Canterbury Mounted Rifles Band. They also spoke highly of his services as a sergt major , during three years at th? war, saying that as sergenat-major Mr Tovey was a most 1 efficient, brave, and kindhearted non-com--1 missioned officer and was always held in the highest esteem by his men.
