(2) When a miner fails to make less than 25s per shift contract- rates shall be paid at not les than that amount. (3) No deductions for dirt or explosions to be allowed from that amount. AN ABORTIVE CONFERENCE. MINERS CERTAIN TO STRIKE. SYDNEY, September 29. (Received September 30, 12.40 a.m.) The conference of Southern colliery proprietors and miners on the deficiency question proved abortive. It is now certain that the men will cease work at the expiry of the fourteen days’ notice already tendered. The miners declare that they have been promised support by various unions, and they are also requesting support from unions overseas should trouble occur. In the event of a strike 20,000 miners in Australia will be thrown idle. THE ENGINEERS’ DISPUTE. NO DECISION REACHED. MELBOURNE, September 29. (Received September 30, 1.20 a.m.) A conference between the Disputes Committee of the Trades Hall and the Engineers’ Union failed to reach a decision on the 48 hour week question and adjourned till Monday. AFFAIRS IN NEW ZEALAND. CANTERBURY SLAUGHTERING DISPUTE. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, September 29. At a sitting of the Conciliation Council, held to consider an application by t-he New Zealand Refrigerating Company for an award to deal with the team system of slaughtering, the respondents named were the Canterbury Freezing Works and Related Trade Employees’ Association, New Zealand Freezing works and Related Employers’ Association. The workers were not represented. The Commissioner said that when the application was received, he had some doubt as to whether the Council had jurisdiction to deal with it, and he had applied to the Arbitration Court for directions. The Registrar replied that the proposed system was an entirely new one for New Zealand. Proceedings should be for a supplementary award, and a dispute should be created as in any ordinary case. The Commissioner added that as respondents had not filed counter-proposals, or nominated assessors, the application for a supplementary award would be forwarded to the Court without any recommendation.
