THE BOOKMAKERS
PETITION TO PARLIAMENT (Special to the Times.) WELLINGTON, May 22. The petitions to Parliament for the licensing of bookmakers were being displayed in the streets of the city to-day, but did not appear to be receiving many signatures. The financial stringency probably has done more than anything else could do to stay the flood of gambling which gained force during the war and the boom period, but it has not created any urgent demand for the restitution of the bookmakers’ former rights.
