TOWN COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of the Town Council was held lat;t night, there being present: The Mayor (Mr J. F. Lillicrap), Councillors A. H. Mackrell, A. F. Clark, J. G. Macdonald, H. J. Farrant, A. Glass, J. Miller, F. W. Preddy, T. D. Lennie, R. P. Meek, M. Macalister and E. Sheehan. Councillor W. Boyes forwarded an apology. THE BANDROOM SITE. Seventeen business men petitioned the Council, in accord with a request, to favourably consider the request of the Regimental Band for a small portion of the Western Reserve adjoining the old Garrison Hall for the purpose of placing the old bandroom thereon. When consideration of the committee’s report recommending that nothing be done in this matter, came up, Councillor F. W. Preddy said that it was not thought the Council had power to accede to the request. More than that, the reserve would probably be required for the works depot and. for tepid baths. He thought it might be possible to take into consideration the allotment of some other place. Councillor Glass seconded the motion, remarking that a wooden building within the fire area would not be permitted. Councillor Lennie moved that the clause be referred back. He hoped that the committee would see its way to find a place for the building. Allowing for the depot and the baths, there would probably still be room for the bandroom. Councillor Miller suggested that there was a suitable section across the railway and near the site asked for. Councillor Farrant suggested that the band should be charged a rent for a site. The clause was referred back. REQUESTS. Seventeen residents of Morton Road petitioned for the erection of a gas lamp between Morton road and Centre street.—Gas Committee to report. Fourteen Grace street residents petitioned for a lamp.—Gas Committee to report. The Invercargill Rowing Club asked the Council to allot a site 120 feet square on the west side of *the estuary channel for sheds.—Referred to Harbour Committee with power to act. P. J. Scully, 72 Venus street, wrote requesting that the sunken footpath on the ea£t side of Venus street should be replaced by one of asphalt.—Works Committee to act. Five residents petitoned that the asphalting of the footpath between Lindisfarne and Bamborough road should be carried out — To lie on the table. GENERAL.

John O’Brien, who stated himself as fearful lest his rest should be disturbed if his request was not acceded to, wrote from 25 Catherine street asking the Council not to grant the site opposite his place at North Invercargill, which has been allotted for a public hall, for the purpose of dancing.—Referred to Finance Committee. It was decided to grant an extra free tramway pass to the Plunket Nurse Society for the use of the second nurse. The secretaiy of the Southland League notified that the total cost of entertaining the officers and men of H.M.S. Chatham was £l6 11/9, of which the Corporation’s proportion was £3 1/-.—Referred to Finance Committee. The Pahiatua County Council forwarded the following resolution for approval:— “That all local bodies be asked to approach the Government requesting it to apportion a part of the loan being raised on the London market for payment of local bodies’ antecedent liabilities.”—Finance Committee to report The Mataura Horticultural Society wrote for particulars regarding the disposal of the old theatre seats. —Councillor Lennie suggested that a ready market might be found for the seats if they were put up in small lots.—Finance Committee to report. The Department of Internal Affairs wrote that the application for authority to sell portion of an area which was pledged as security for an abattoir loan in order to raise additional funds for alterations and improvements to the abattoirs would have consideration.—Received. Sydney Smith, 14 Mitchell street, wrote objecting to the proposed removal of the gas lamp at present between Lindisfarne and Ritchie street. Great inconvenience would be caused the residents of the locality by the removal.—lt was decided to re-con-sider the matter. Mr A. L. Austin waited on the Council with reference to his application for a secondhand dealer’s license. He did not wish to trade on the license but only to protect himself from the law. Mr Austin was assured that his representations would have consideration. When the matter was considered later it was decided to take no action.
