THE LAKES DISTRICT

TELEPHONE COMMUNICATION. Mr J. Cockburn, Arthur’g Point, has written to the Southland League asking it to bring under the notice of the Government the necessity of pushing ahead with the work of connecting the Queenstown and Wakatipu districts with Southland by telephone. Mr Cockburn pointed out that the fact that these districts are already linked up by telephone with Dunedin has the effect of sending business in that direction to the exclusion of Southland. The secretary of the League informed a reporter yesterday that the League had brought the matter before the visiting members of Parliament and as far back as twelve months ago had been led to understand that as soon as the material was available telephonic communication would be established between Queenstown • and Invercargill. If nothing was done soon the League would make further representations to the Government.
