COMMERCIAL TRAVELLERS

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Southland Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen’s Association on Saturday evening was largely attended. The president, Mr E. H. Wood, presided. The annual report stated that the profit and loss account showed that the balance brought forward was £438 15/10, and that the balance to be carried forward from this year was £455 0/1, showing a profit for the year of £l6 4/3. A comparison of the principal items as against those of last year was as follows: —Subscriptions (1921) £197 8/-, (1922) £207 18/-, billiards £266 17/6, £264 1/6; rooms £56 8/-, £lO9 12/-; tobacco £224 1/3, cordials £4l 6/3, £53 7/1. Out of this year’s revenue the committee was called upon to provide £64 15/6 for alterations and maintenance, this being £3B more than the amount necessary for this item last year, and a further amount of £l3 was expended in billiard cues which were not taken into stock as assets. In addition to this the committee had written £l4 3/7 off the billiard tables and furnishings and £lO off the piano. During the year £3O had been paid off the debentures, bringing these down to £5B 14/3, including interest to date. Taking these items into consideration—together with the fact that two items of revenue of last year, Rugby Union rent £l3 10/- and concert £l7 3/-, were non-recurring this year—the position of the Association as disclosed by the bal-ance-sheet could only be regarded as satisfactory. The membership was 189 as against 195 last year. During the year 28 new members were elected and 34 resigned or were written off. The book* show that at the end of the year 148 members were financial and 50 mmbers had not forwarded their subscriptions at March 31. The committee would remind members who have not paid their subscriptions that they were unfinancial and should rectify this at the earliest possible date. During the year several social and musical evenings were held in the rooms and these as in the past proved most enjoyable. At these function* the Association entertained the members of the South African football team, the Southland Rugby Union and the Southland team. A Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen’s ball was also held, which proved a well-at-tended and brilliant affair, and the committee desired to express it* thanks to all those who helped and carried out arrangements in connection with the ball. The report was adopted. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows: —President, Mr E. H. Wood; vicepreeident, Mr W. H. Woodward; horn secretary and treasurer, Mr T. Nisbet; committee, Messrs T. H. Smith, T. Baird, W. G. Compton, T. Springford, and D. R. Robinson, Mr J. H. Tattersfield moved that the committee elected at the annual meeting be empowered to elect, reject or expel candidates for admission as members. Mr J. McGrath seconded the motion, which was carried. A second motion by Mr Tattersfield, that no member on the committee be allowed to propose or second any candidate for admission as a member, was rejected. It was decided to increaae the annual subscription for town members to £2, a rebate of 10/- to be allowed on all subscription* paid on or before June 30. The subscription for members joining after June 30 was fixed at £2, 10/- to be deducted ii the subscription was paid within a month. The subscription for country members «as not altered-
