CALEDONIAN SOCIETY
CARNIVAL COMING. At a recent meeting the Southland Caledonian Society decided to run a Jubilee Carnival from September 8 for ten days. The Society has been fifty-four years in existence and its 50th jubilee fell during the war when, as so many of its members were away and as it was engaged in patriotic work wholly, no suitable observance could be made. Now, however, it has been decided to attempt, to replenish the coffers which became so depleted during the war owing to nothing but patriotic work being carried on. It will be remembered that it was not so long since the Society was in the position of holding sports meetings at which prizes were offered that caused those fixtures to be looked forward to by the flower of the Dominion’s athletes, and it is intended to make an effort that, if it is a successful as is hoped will place the Society on the road to that proud position once more, for the mambera recognise that the holding of such meetings, attracting competitors, is a valutbte a-ivertiaement for the province.
