OTAUTAU WINTER SHOW

A GOOD ALL-ROUND DISPLAY. Under the auspices of the Otautau Progressive League, the annual Wallace Winter and Poultry Show was opened in the Otautau Hall yesterday. There was a good all-round exhibition, but it was noticeable, in some instances, that competition was limited when it should have been strong. Nevertheless, the show has progressed since last year, and the entries yesterday totalled 1,074 as against last year’s 700. Should the show make the same progress the next two years the present building will be inadequate for the requirements. The dairy produce section was judged by Mr A. Milne, and some good samples of farm made produce came before him. The preserves and baking section were one of the strongest in the show and the judge, Mrs Miller, had considerable difficulty in making her awards. Displays of dainty table delicacies always make an appeal and this section was one of the most interesting of the show. On many occasions it has been asserted that Southland was not an apple producing province, but the quality of the entries placed before the judge, Mr J. Lennie, proved that Southland can produce apples which are as good as those of northern provinces. The entries were not very large, but the collective exhibit waa attractive. Root crops and vegetables occupied another prominent place in the catalogue, and the competition was keen throughout. The potatoes shown were well shaped, despite their size, for in some instances one tuber would have made a fair meal for more than one person. The turnips both hard and soft, were fair farm products. In all cases they carried clearly defined tap roots, and, presented a maximum feeding value. The cereal exhibits for such a good cropping district, were disappointing, there being only one exhibitor in each section

The needlework section was judged by Mrs Evans, and some fine examples of needlework were placed before her for decision, the display being large and varied. The utility poultry section showed 8 marked increase on last year’s entry, and some fine birds came before Mr H. Cunningham for examination. The special for the best hen in the show went to Mrs dent, the winning bird being a nice utility bird. It was unfortunate that there was do special for the best bird in the show as the best bird, a Black Orpington cock, was a particularly fine one. His colour was rich in green sheen, and, although a trifle slack underneath for a utility bird, he would be hard to beat in an open exhibition clan.
