WAIKIWI HALL

ALL NATIONS CARNIVAL. SUCCESSFULLY OPENED. The carnival to raise funds for improvements to the Waikiwi Public Hall was successfully opened yesterday afternoon The wet weather prevented many of those living some distance from the hall from being present but those residing closer at hand turned out in large numbers and the carnival was launched under very satisfactory conditions. Mr J. R. Hamilton, M.P., officially declared the carnival opened and in doing so expressed his pleasure at being present. He congratulated the people of Waikiwi on the excellent display of useful articles which adorned the stalls and on the manner in which the hall had been decorated. He referred briefly to the advantages to be obtidned from the possesion of a good public hall, which, he stated, played an important part in the social life of the community and served to establish more friendly relations. He wished the committee success in its venture and hoped that everyone would liberally patronise the stalls and the other attractions offered. When the carnival was opened the stallholders quickly got down to business and met with a great deal of success, the side attractions also being liberally patronised. In the evening there was another large attendance and the musical programme provided by the Gleeson concert party was greatly enjoyed. A spectacular marching demonstration carried out by 25 young ladies under the direction of SergeantMajor Sutton also proved to be a welcome attraction and the march was carried out with excellent precision. The evening’s business was also entirely satisfactory and the carnival, which has several novel attractions promises to be an unqualified success. The winners of the various competitions 'are as follows : —Teaspoons; M. Boyle ; box of tea, Mrs W. Robertson ; cake, Miss Fraser ; box chocolates (No. 1), D. Leitch ; (No. 2), T. D. Kingsland. The evening’s takings amounted to the very satisfactory sum of £l2O 6/-. To-night a programme vill be given by Mr A. Sutherland’s party.
