VISITORS’ VIEWS
INVERCARGILL AND ITS PEOPLE A glance at the visitors’ book kept at the Tourist Office is worth while occasionally, for sometimes visitors are struck by happy thoughts and sometimes they break out along critical lines. It is remarkable that in the record of those who have penned their names within the last twelve months there are quite a number of-people who have seemingly been impressed favourably by the people of the town. “Charmed with the people,” a Londoner has written; “people are charming,” is the way a lady from New York City expresses the same sentiment. A West Australian breaks into verse that recalls in memoriam lines one has read:— It's a fine place is InvercargiU A real bonny town, you know; At the Tourist Bureau you can spend A leisure hour or so. A critic who was born in Seattle, U.8.A., was the author of the following lines: “You should have better trams and a connection from the south to Australia, and better arrangements for passports for tourists.” It should be explained that the date of his entry is before the arrival of the American “one-man” trams. Strangely enough, some will say, the driest comment among the later entries is made by a citizen of a Scottish community (Dunedin) —“A very dry city (?).” It is something of a pity that the book is not more patronised by visitors, and it is likely that a card inviting them to place entries therein would have some effect.
