Williams, is announced. A Sydney Press Association cable states that Inspector Fowler, who was a witness in the Ponsonby murder trial, has been appointed officer in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department in succession to Superintendent Bannan, retired. Mr Bert Whitmore who for the past four years has been on the local staff of the National Bank has been transferred to Riverton and leaves for the old Western town this week. Mr Whitmore has been a keen member of the Invercargill Cricket Club and other sporting bodies. A Christchurch Press Association telegram states that Mr Charles McCoy, a land and estate agent and sharebroker, died suddenly yesterday, aged 38. He was well known in cricketing circles, being a member of the Canterbury Cricket Association, and the Now Zealand Cricket Council Mr W. P. Morrell, of Otago University, who has been awarded the Post-Graduate Scholarship in Arte of the University of New Zealand, was educated at the Otago Boys’ High School. He was head of the Junior University Scholarship list, qualified for three senior scholarships in 1919, and gained double first-class honours in the M.A. examination in 1920. He has been doing research work in History at Otago University. Mr J. Thompson, who has been awarded the Travelling Scholarship in French, by the University of New Zealand, has occu pied the position of lecturer in French at Victoria College (Wellington) since his return from war service. Mr Thompson graduated from Otago University with first class honours in languages in 1914, when he joined the staff of the Waitaki Boys' High School. At Otago University Mr Thompson was a prominent member of the Fust Fifteen. Mr J. T. Martin, manager of the Wellington branch of Wright, Stephenson, and Co., Ltd., who is leaving on a business trip to the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, was made the recipient of a presentation from the Wellington and head office staffs of the company. Mr H. C. Wilton, the sub-manager, in handing Mr Martin a pair of binoculars for himself and a silver purse for Mrs Martin, expressed the wish that Mr and Mrs Martin would enjoy their trip. The Timaru Post states that the World Press Conference has appointed the follow* ing as chairmen and vice-chairmen of commissions:—News communications, chairman, Colonel Edward F. Lawson (London Daily Telegraph) ; vice-chairman, Mr B. W. Fleiaher (Tokio Advertiser); interchange ot journalists, chairman, Mr Guy Innes (Melbourne Herald); vice-chairman, Mr Hallington K. Tong (Review of the Far East, Pekin) ; journalistic education, chairman, Mr K. Suginura (Tokio); vice-chairman, Mr Robert Bell (Lyttelton Times). The next congress is expected to be held in 1923 m some European city.
