SHORT OR LONG?

THE BATTLE OF SKIRTS. LONDON CONTROVERSY. LONDON, April 24. The Battle of the Skirts has begun in Britain. Interest is rising higher as petticoats show signs of descending lower. Leading women and Society .artists are joining in the controversy. Sir William Orpen, the famous painter, has drawn for the London Daily Mail some pictures of short skirts showing trim legs and bulgy legs. He accompanies the sketch with a dissertation on fashionable dressing which would show, he says the best and not the worst of woman. The Hon. Mrs Fortescue, who has a dress salon at Hampstead, a fashionable centre, when interviewed, said :—“ Skirts are going to be much longer. I’m very glad. I think these Paris designs are intended for French women. With their small feet they can wear , short skirts, but I do not think English women can.” Miss Gloria Swanson prefers skirts longer. ' Sir James Shannon, president of the Society of Portrait Painters, regards the present style as very beautiful, and would be sorry to see skirts touching the ground again. Ascot costumes are expected to set a new style for skirts, which will be at least 2in. longer.
