GLUT OF WHEAT
LYTTELTON SHEDS FULL. PROBLEM OF DISPOSAL. (Special to the Timee.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 4 Tri-day at Lyttelton there are approximately 137,000 sacks (490,000 bushels) of wheat in store. At an average price of 5d to 6d per bushel this would mean the distribution of about £|25,000 to Canterbury farmers Unfortunately, however, about two-fifths of this quantity is not worth the figure stated, and just what to do with the greater part of it is a problem that growers have to face—whether to sell it fowl feed or “hang on” in the hope that it will “come back” and secure milling values. At the port the sight of tier upon tier of sacks is quite impressive. In one of thej sheds is a big tier of good wheat, approximately 8000 sacks altogether. There ar# about 200,000 bushels of export wheat on hand, and notwithstanding reports from time to time that a big parcel had been sold “to the East” there is no confirmatory intelligence of such a transaction.
