THE IRON TRADE
DUNEDIN FOUNDRIES SLACK. (Special to the Times.) DUNEDIN, May 4. The Dunedin foundries are having a long spell of inactivity, and several are working only about half time. In all there is a readiness on the part of the employers to close for an extra half day if called upon, and none are manned to their full strength. Asked whether he saw any sign of a revival of business, a leading ironmaster replied that there was a better feeling in the trade, and he was quite hopeful about a revival, but one could not convert that hope into a belief since there was no outstanding fact to point to anything in the way of new business or new projects. He noted, however, that others ;is well as him self were careful to retain the services of the highly skilled artisans, even if to do so they had to be kept pottering about.
