FOOTBALL TO-DAY
AMENDED RULES TO BE PLAYED. 8 The fact- that the brilliant Star are to meet Invercargill would in itself be sufficient attraction to draw football enthusiasts in hundreds to Rugby Park to-day, but a great number more will attend to witness the games being played under the modified rules for the first time in Southland. The supporters of the kicking into touch rule as previously only played in the Auckland province contend that it vastly improves the game from the spectators’ viewpoint, which also makes it faster and more open. The new rule really means that if a ball is kicked into touch on the full outside of the kicker’s 25 yards line the other side shall bring same into play by a line-out opposite the spot where the kick took place. It will be seen at once that this rule when applied will greatly improve the game, and that the side wishing to win will have to keep the ball more in play than hitherto. The Star team to-day will be captained by that astute geqpral “Checker” Oughton, while ex-representative P. Rica will lead the “Blues.” Several changes have been made in both teams which vidH be as follows:—■
Star—(Backs), J. Lilley, R, Oughton, H, Brown, N. Stead, D. Murray, J. Oughton; forwards, J. Murray, D. HaU, R. Barry, J. R. Bell, B. Leggat, N. R. Brown, A. F. H. Morrow, H. Agnew. Invercargill—(Backs), G. Cleland, F. Lopdell, L. Guthrie, Irving, E. Guthrie, M. Lyttle, L. Dalgleish; forwards, P. Rise, 0. Rice, Marshall. Garrett, Pearce, Smith, Mili’cr, and Frasier. The Pirates versus Marist match commences ax 2 p.m., and if the weather and ground are suitable the first spell will be played on No. 1 area.
