SPORTING.

NOTES BY SIR MODRED. South Canterbury J.C. Autumn meeting concludes to-day Wanganui J.C. Winter meeting entries are due on Monday next. North Otago (Oamaru) J.C. nominations close on Tuesday, May 2nd. Marlborough R.C. Autumn meeting on Friday and Saturday of next week. Forbury Park T.C. Winter fixture due on Thursday and Saturday next (May 4 and 6). Entries for the New Brighton T.C: Autumn meeting close at noon on Wednesday next. Acceptances for the Ashburton County J.C. meeting are called for on Wednesday, May 5. The winning jockey’s list is headed by A. Reed with 57 victories, then comes C. Emerson with 37. Handicaps for the Great Northern Steeplechase and G.N. Hurdle Race will be issued on Monday, May 8. Entries for the Dunedin J.C.’s Winter fixture, on May 30, June 1 and 3, are to close on Friday, May 12. The three-year-old Winning Hit is being spelled for two months. He won £4780 during the current season. The Winton-owned gelding Marching Order has been taken out of cominissicn and is to be treated to a spell. F. H. Hill, who used to train on the S. tracks, but who has for some time past been acting as private mentor to the Tapanui owner (Mr W. Robertson), won two races at the Beaumont fixture for his patron. Hill’s successful pupils were Rose Lady (Rose Noble—Red Charm) and Solway (Solferino—Red Charm). The latter is a two-year-old colt who is likely to be heard from next season on several occasions He is very highly spoken of by good judges who saw him race on the goldfields. It is interesting to note that the Tapanui representative claims an engagement in the Winton Stakes of November next. Quite a number of smart youngsters remain in the Stakes, three of the number, Laughing Eyes, Gold Light and Solwaj r having already won races. A new arrival in J. Pankhuret s string is one of the chubbiest and corkiest youngsters imaginable. He is a strong little rising two-yearold by Soldier’s Chorus — Multoe, by Multifid, and it is evident that he has been reared in a satisfactory manner by his breeder, M. T. E .Taylor, of Bluff. On the first day he was ridden out, he was guided through the streets of Invercargill by Ivan Tilson, and it is on record that he behaved himself like a little gentleman. Trainer W. Robinson is absent at Timaru superintending the running of his pupils, Warhaven and Muzzle. If he does not return promptly Robinson will arrive back here to find that Wild Night has ben developed as a hurdler. The son of Antagonist was tried out over the battens during the current week as companion in a schooling task with Palladio and acquitted himself to the entire satisfaction of J. Callaghan, who acted as first pilot to Mr IL Timpany’s gelding. Writing to the Sydney Sun of April 20, ‘'Poseidon” remarks:—“A few weeks ago if anyone had said that Eurythmic would not have won a race at the A.J.C. Autumn meeting people would have langhed at such a statement. Especially as the hitherto r.h ampirm was engaged in all the long-dis-tance wla. events. He was defeated in the Autumn and Cumberland Stakes, and is Dot • to take part on the last day of the meetuig. It is evident that Eurythmic is not in the form he was when in Melbourne last month, otherwise Sister dive, Furious and David would not have beaten him, not to mention Beauford. All true sportsmen will deplore the fact if all is not well with Etrythmic. At least two persons have witnessed the training operations at Randwick during the past week were of the opinion that Eurythmic made a distinct “noise”—not so pronounced that everyone would detect it, but only when the wind was in a certain quarter to carry the sound towards them. If so, it will be deplored that such a great performer may be put out of action to a great extent, as no doubt if it were developing it would gradually become more pronounced, and greatly interfere with hus racing. At a meeting of the executive of the Otautau Racing Club it was decided to race next year in connection with the Hunt Club, the two meetings following one another about the last Wednesday and Thursday in January. It is almost certain that the Wairio Jockey Club will arrange their date for Saturday of the same week. The local fight harness mentor W .Muir __ will leave for Dunedin to-day with Royal Step and Wallroon to take part in the Forbury Park Club’s Winter meeting on Thursday and Saturday next. Mr T. Kett wilu also probably leave to-day for Forbury with the trotter ClonmeL The Canterbury-owned hurdler, Sonny, is being schooled over the steeplechase fences at Riccarton. He is reported to be going about his work in a very careful manner. The brood mare Multoe, by Multifie— Natoe was found dead in her paddock, adjacent to the Southland Racing Club’s property, one morning during the current week. She was in excellent condition and there was no outward sign to account for her death, but she had a very strenuous turf career and this may have shortened her days. The black mare was rising eleven years of age and was owned by Mr Taylor, better known as the enthusiast who races Mettle Drift. Multde has only produced one foal, a son of Soldier’s Chorus, who is Dow undergoing his educational treatment as a rising twoyearold. The five-year-old gelding Orange Bitters, by Nassau—Orniolu, has been put to the hurdle racing game. He was tried dus at Wingatui recently and took to the hurdles in great style, leaping like a buck. Orange Bitters is a fast horse on the flat, but barely good enough in his class and it is quite possible that he will develop into a useful performer at the illegimate sport, as so many sprinters have done before him. In any case his schooling experiences may give him the requisite confidence to race more generously in the flat division. Light harness trainer, A. McLeiian, intends leaving for Dunedin on Monday with Blue Chimes, Seisa, Harold's Treasure and Downcast to assist at the forthcoming Forbury Park J.C. Winter meeting. It is understood that Mr W. Stone’s horses will be campaigned from Oamaru for some time to come, as this will place them within easy reach of the Ashburton, Timaru, North Otago and Dunedin meetings. The high cost of railway travelling has probably decided Mr Stone in this direction and, if so, it is another instance in which Invercargill has been adversely affected by the high cost of transport and the curtailed railway service. On Wednesday, May 10, Mr George Hunter, of Wyndham, will dispose of his well-known trotting stud, comprising six high-class brood mares and other stock. The breeding mares are as follows:—Castout (Boldrewood—Castoff, by Berlin imp.) with a foal at fdbt by Coldstream Bells; Cuckoo (The Lark —Nonsense, by Toronto, by Texas), with a foal at foot by Four Chimes and stinted to Sungod; Isabella (Rothschild —-Miss Bromley, by Young Berlin—Marian), stinted to Sungod; Clara Bell (Bellman— Weary), the ram of Dranitui and granddam of Adair, and she is stinted co Sungod; Hectoria (Sir Hector—Pinhole Patchen marei, stinted to Sungod; bay mare (Frank Robbins —Kentucky mare), stinted to Sungod. Of the other stock: Deepstream (Coldstream Bells—Cuckoo) is a three-yearold pacing gelding; Jack Derby (Lord Derby— Cuckooi is a two-yearjjld gelding pacer; Ten Belk (Coldstream ' Bells—Clara Bell) a two-year-old pacer gelding; Four Belk (Coldstream Bells—Clar. Bell), a yearling pacer gelding; Daytime (Four Chimes—King Harold mare ) a four year-old pacing gelding; Firebell (Coldstream Belk—Wild Donah, by Wildwood), five-year-old pacing mare; Bell Harold (Harold Rothschild —Jenny Belk, sister to Clara Bell), three-year-old pacing gelding; Outcast (Wallace T, —Castout), five-year-old pacing mare. Some two year® ago Mr Hunter disposed of Coldwater, Oaknut, Downoart,, Away and

Lady Adonis at a similar auction sale. Messrs Hunter Bros, and Rice will conduct the sale at Wyndham on the date referred to. His recent strenuous campaign at Otago and Southland meetings has not done ViceGrand any harm, as the son of Vice-Admiral and Fibrona is eager and anxious to set about his tasks, while his working companion, Mettle Drift, appears to have thrown off the soreness that troubled him during the summer months. The local trainer J. Gray has taken over James and the Sunny Lake Gelding is being worked on the Southland R.C. tracks. Gray is a patient mentor, and can ride his own charges at a handy weight when necessary, a fact that should contribute to Mr Mason’s gelding being will-wintered for an early start next season. With ordinary luck, James should win good money next season. SOUTH CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB. OPENING OF AUTUMN MEETING. THREE SOUTHLAND HORSES WIN. (Special to the Times). TIMARU, April 28. The South Canterbury Jockey Chib’s Autumn meeting opened,on the Washdyke convincing ground this afternoon in favourable weather. The attendance was good for an opening day, and a number of visitors were present from Christchurch and Dunedin, and as far away as Invercargill and Riverton. The Southlanders were attracted by the presence of a number of horses owned in their home district, and they had reason to be pleased, as the southern representatives, Roseday, Warhaven and Liqueur accounted for a race apiece, while other visitors, viz., Gunlayer and Lady Blissful, earned second berths. Roseday, who captured the open sprint event, Smithfield Handicap, did his work well for Mr Stone, and was turned out in great shape by F. W. Ellis. A very popular success with southerners was that recorded by the two-year-old, Warhaven, who thus won his first race for Mr Kilkelly. The Kilbroney gelding is a cast-off from Mr Stone’s string, and cost his present owner something like 400 guineas, but he looks to be well worth the money. Lady Blissful ran a good race in the Doncaster Welter Handicap, but was unlucky to strike Tatau Tatau in galloping humour. The totalisator investments amounted to £16,987 10/-, as compared with £21,772 10/- on the corresponding day of last season, a decrease of £4785. Results :

A MEETING OF CHAMPIONS, BEAUFORD AND GLOAMING COMPARED. AUSTRALIAN PRESS COMMENT. SYDNEY, April 28. “The Arrow’s” turf critic, in commenting on Beauford’s recent victories, says:—“One thing certain, there is only one horee in Australia or New Zealand that can be conMidered to have ths slightest

him up to one and a-half miles, and that is Gloaming.” Discussing the possibilities of Gloaming coming to Australia to meet Beauford next spring, the critic declares: “It is certain that Beauford would be favourite after the exhibition he made of Eurythmic. The crowd would not back anything else, despite Gloaming’s reputation. Gloaming would certainly test Beau ford, but it must not be overlooked that Gloaming is getting old, while, probably, Beauford would be in better form in the spring. In that case it would probably be the Beauford-Eurythmic battle repeated.” BOXING PROPOSED DEMPSEY-CARPENTIER CONTEST. (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) PARIS, April 27. Dempsey’s manager announces that if Carpentier defeats Lewis English, promoters will seek to stage the Carpentier-Dempsey contest in London. Dempsey is visiting Germany and Switzerland. ASSOCIATION MEETING. A General meeting of the Committee of Management was held in the Secretary’s Office on Saturday and attended by Mr D. W. Stalker (chairman), Messrs G. Bishop, C. Davis, G. Macauley, J. J. Ward, M. T. Ward. Consideration of several applications for matches by professional boxers was deferred until later in the season. The sum of £lO was donated to the Southland League on account of their expenses in entertaining the Chatham seamen. Mr W. Dawkins tendered his resignation as a member of the committee on account of removal from the district. This was received with regret and the secretary was - instructed to thank Mr Dawkins for his past services. It was decided to tender a benefit entertainment to the wife and child of the late V. L. Butler (“V. Cox”) in the Municipal Treatre on May 18 to consist of boxing exhibitions first half and vaudeville second half at popular prices all boxers and performers to give their services free. It was resolved to hold a Novice Tournament consisting of bantam, feather, light, welter and middle weight classes restricted to Gore and Pukerau boxers at Gore on May 23. • The date of the annual meeting of the Association was fixed for May 23 and the Southland Championship Tournament on June 6 and 7.
