PROBABLES AND NOMINATIONS.
To the Editor. Sir, —Juvenis in reply to my letter advises me to look up the word “juvenis.” Does Juvenis know (evidently not) that the word “juvenis” as used by some of the best known Latin authors (Livy, Cicero, Horace) means, primarily “a young man or youthful,” and secondly it means a person between the age of 17 and 45 years? Having these two meanings in my mind, and having read some of the criticisms of Juvenis, I had only the one conclusion to draw—viz., that Juvenis of the Southland Times came under the first of the above-mentioned categories. I think it would be good advice to Juvenis to brush up his Latin. But to return from this digression and to revert to football, Juvenis seems to be rather alow of understanding and requires rather unnecessary explanation. He is still unconvinced as to whether those men named in the Christchurch ( Star were “probables” or “Nominations.” Well if they were not “Probables” what indeed were. they. They were surely not “Nominations” for (1) who gave permission to the Christchurch Stax critic to pick the nominations for Canterbury? (2) The nominations from Canterbury not only appeared after the Star’s criticism, but even appeared after my letter. (3) Some of the men mentioned by the Christchurch Star were not even nominated by the Canterbury selectors for the S.I. team. Therefore do not these three conclusive facts prove that these men were not “Nominations” but merely players with likely and probable chances of being picked to represent the 8.1. The main reason I wrote was to uphold the true ideas concerning the Canterbury players—those ideas circulated by the Christchurch newspaper. In conclusion I might inform Juvenis that I still travel (even past Timaru) and I leave in a few days to witness the inter-island match in Christchurch on July 2. Should he desire my opinion of the S.I. playem I would willingly give it. Thanking you, Mr Editor, in anticipation.—l am, etc., J. C. KINGHAM.
