SOUTHLAND WAR FUNDS

MEETING OF MAIN COMMITTEE. The monthly meting of the Main Committee of the War Funds Association was held in the Association’s rooms or Thursday afternoon when there were present: Dr Trotter (Riverton), Messrs M. Thompson, J. Gilkison (Invercargill), J. 8. A. McDougall (Bluff), H. E. Niven (Edendale), C. Bennet (Gore), J. Fisher (Otautau), K. G. McKenzie (Fortrose), J. Lowden (Mataura), D. McDonald (Limehills) and also Messrs D. Clark and A. E. Cocker (Ryal Bush). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs H. W. Royds, E. Butler, J. Turnbull and A. MacKenfiie. Mr M. Thompson was unanimously reelected chairman for the ensuing year. The secretary presented the financial statement, which showed the funds at date to be as follows:—Soldiers and dependents, £49,337 0/3; general war fund £3,834 1/5; equipment fund £3OO 0/2; advances outstanding £1157 5/3; liability on account of other funds and Defence Office £1127 2/9; Bank overdraft £BB7 16/6; receipts Since April 1 £315 5/10; expenditure for same period £1228 6/5. It was proposed to withdraw £2OOO Horn the Public Trustee on July 1. This amount, with interest due, was judged to be sufficient to carry on till the end of December, when the position could be reviewed. The statemetnt was received and the pro posal to withdraw was endorsed. Correspondence was received from the Taranaki War Relief Association relating to its scheme of distribution of funds to permanently disabled men; the Advisory Board, asking for remits for the conference in August; the War Funds Office; two applications regarding purchase or lease of the Convalescent Home; and also several letters of appreciation from those who had been assisted since the last meeting.

The secretary was instructed to write to the Advisory Board suggesting the urgency of setting up the War Funds Council on a more extended basis as early as practicable, and to also urge that Red Cross funds should not be diverted from those districts in which the funds were collected.

The matter of dealing with a prospective purchaser or lessee of the Convalescent Home was left with the Emergency Committee to make terms and report. The report of the Emergency Committee was then reviewed, and several referred cases were disposed of, after which a number of new applications w’ere dealt with. Grants amounting to £127 8/- and advances amounting to £3ll were authorised for payment.
