The Springbok footballers 3 few hours after their arrival met and defeated a Victorian team by 51 to nil. The visitors showed fine combination and swiftnisa. THE LEAGUE GAME. QUEENSLAND BEAT NEW ZEALAND. BRISBANE, June 19. Queensland beat New Zealand at League by 8 points to 3. In the New Zealand team Saunders and Bass replaced Me El wee and Paki and in the Queensland team Fraunfelder, Ryn and Kreutzer replaced Fewin, Bath and Johnson. Otherwise the teams were the same as last Saturday. POLO. AMERICA BEATS ENGLAND, LONDON, June 18. (Received June 20, 12 p.m.) The King and Queen and the King of Spain and many Royalties witnessed ths first of the Polo tests between England and America. The latter won by eleven goals to four. The game was very fast. The Americans were better mounted, using superb ponies, and played with more understanding. The British threw away chances through poor shooting and lack of cohesion. BOWLING. NEW ZEALANDERS IN BRITAIN. LONDON, June 17. The Scottish and Partick bowlers defeated the New Zealanders by 121 to 113. LONDON, June 18. The New Zealand bowlers defeated Glasgow by 108 to 105. In a practice match on Eden course, St. Andrew’s, Kirkwood and Hutchinson of America beat Williams and Havers 4 up and 1 to play. Kirkwood played brilliantly. THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP. ENGLISH CRITICS FORECAST. LONDON, June 18. The Westaminster Gazette critic discussing the open golf championship commencing at St. Andrews on Monday, says: “It the winner is not one of the following six: Mitchell, Hutchinson (who is a native of St. Andrews), Kirkwood, Ray, Havers or Duncan, we will be much surprised. Mitchell’s play last month was most brilliant and on present form he is incomparably the world's best golfer. If he were as great a stroke as a match player the championship ought to be a cakewalk for him. We are strongly inclined to fancy the chances of Mitchell, Hutchinson and Kirkwood tgainst the rest of the field. FRENCH LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP. | PARIS, June 18. In ladies’ golf at Fontainebleau, semifinals Miss Leitch beat Miss Griffiths, 1 up. Miss Wethered beat Miss Sterling (America) 5 up and 4 to play. Mias Leitch was really fortunate to beat Miss Griffiths, who played better golf through the greens, but she missed several short putts. They were all square at the fifteenth bole. Miss Griffiths lost the game at the sixteenth hole, where she missed a foot putt. Misses Molly Griffiths, Leitch, Stirling and Wethered qualified for some of the finals 18 the French ladies’ championship.
