LOUIS DE ROUGEMONT
DEATH IN INFIRMARY. FAMOUS IMPOSTURE RECALLED. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, June 10. (Received June 11, 1.5 a.m.) The death occurred in Kensington Infirmary of the famous hoaxer, Louis de Rougemont. Louis de Rougemont, a Frenchman or of French extraction, at one time a resident of Collingwood, in the Nelson district, appeared in London in the late ’nineties and narrated a circumstantial story of amazing adventure in the north-west of Australia. He was taken up by the Wide World Magazine, then just established, and the unfolding of his narrative in its pages created a literary sensation. The story was at first implicitly believed, but de Rougemont’s adventures were subsequently proved to be entirely imaginary. After the expolure of his imposture, de Rougemont driftinto obscurity.
