THE PUBLIC SERVICE
COMMISSION ON ECONOMIES. REPORT EXPECTED SHORTLY. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June .9 The report of the Public Service Economies Commission comprising the principal heads of the Public Service, which was appointed to report what economies can be effected in the service, is expected within six weeks. The Commission has been inquiring thoroughly into the working of all the State Departments. It is stated that many economies have already been carried out. As the most important improvements involve reduction of staff it may be some time before the full result of the Commission’s labours will be seen. TEMPORARY CLERKS. A REPORT DENIED. WELLINGTON, June 9. The authorities contradict the published statement to the effect that a large number of temporary clerks in the Civil Service will be dispensed with, many of whom were employed throughout the war period. The allegation that hundreds of clerks have been put off during the past six weeks is denied. It is explained that there have been no changes recently except ordinary changes, one man leaving and another taking his place. Men are being retained even when their services could be dispensed with, in accordance with the Government’s desire that men should not be thrown on the labour market while unemployment is acute.
