Mr Philip Newbury, the well-known tenor vocalist, arrived in Wellington from Sydney by the Ulimaroa on Monday. A Wellington Press Association message states that Messrs R. C. Drummond, Patrick Duddy and Andrew Gregor have been appointed inspectors of factories.
Mr Radford Henry Brodrick has been appointed a trustee of the Invercargill Savings Bank, says a Wellington Press Association telegram.
Mr John Smith has completed his twentyfourth year as a member of the Wellington Licensing Committee, and Mr George Petherick has been a member of that body for twenty-one years.
A Press Association message states that the Ixindon office of the Bank of New Zealand tendered a luncheon to Mr Massey. The Governor of the Bank of England was present.
A Washington Press Association message states that Mr A. D. Lasker, a prominent advertising specialist, has accepted the chairmanship of the United States Shipping Board, succeeding Admiral Benson.
Mr W. Hinchey, chairman of the Southland Electric Power Board, who has been on a visit to Wellington in order to wait upon the Minister of Finance, returned to Invercargill by the express last evening. After an absence of two years in London, Mr Ernest Drake, the well-known tenor, returned to Auckland this week. It is Mr Drake’s intention to remain a few months in the Dominion, and arrangements are being made for him to give a series of recitals before returning to fulfil engagements. The birthday knighthood received by Sir Edwin Mitchelson, president of the Auckland Racing Club, caused him to be the recipient of many congratulations at the A.R.C. Winter meeting at Ellerslie. Many old colonists who have known Sir Edwin since his boyhood gave him their good wishes. The expressions were obviously deeply appreciated by the recipient. Mr H. Carr, Commissioner of the Native Land Court, has arrived at Rotorua to take up duty in the court there, and will remain during the absence of Mr H. F. Ayson at Rarotonga. It is probable that he will be a representative of the Government at the conference in connection with the consolidation of Crown interests in the Urewera countiy to take place at Ruatoki during July.
Mr H. B. Sorensen, Danish Consul in Christchurch, has been created a Knight of the Order of Dannebrog, by the King of Denmark, in recognition of his services as Consul during the last twelve years. Mr Sorensen is already a Knight of St. Olav (Norwegian), being awarded that honour some years ago by the King of Norway, in recognition of Consular services performed in New Zealand for that country. A Westport Press Association telegram states that the Hon. G. J. Anderson, Minister of Mines, made a tour of the mining townships of the Buller district, including Denniston, Granity, Millerton, Stockton, and Seddonville, the last named being the scene of co-operative mining on a fairly extensive scale. On his return to town Mr Anderson was tendered a civic luncheon and a civic reception, and later heard deputations regarding the Buller Gorge railway and scientific research into the by-products of brown coals. The Minister will leave for Nelson this morning. The gradation list of the New Zealand permanent forces has just been issued. Generals, colonels, lieut.-colonels, and majors run in the following order of seniority :—-General officers, Sir E. W. C. Chaytor, G. S. Richardson; colonels, C. W. Melville, R.
