MOTOR CAR TAXATION.

To the Editor. Sir, —For many years this subject has been discussed by Parliament, local bodies and motor associations, hut so far nothing has been done to stop the enormous wastage which is ever increasing. The latest census of motor driven vehicles gives Invercargill 2215 and Southland County 1893. Any motorist will admit that the upkeep of a motor car (tyres, petrol, springs etc.) would be easily reduced by £4 per annum if good roads were provided instead of the unsatisfactory existing ones. This saving would total £16,432, and the position is this. That £16,432 or more is being annually sent out of Invercargill and Southland to foreign countries for materials which are simply wasted by bad roads, whereas if this sum were paid every year into a fund, to be used for up-to-date construction of our main arterial roads, we would in a few years have comfortable roads to use, besides providing employment for a considerable number of men ir> our own district.— I am, etc., ECONOMY.
