COALITION CANDIDATE DEFEATED. LONDON, June 7. (Received June 8, 5.5 p.m.) The St. George’s by-election resulted: Mr Erskine (Independent Conservative), 7244; Sir Robert Jessel (Coalitionist), 5358. St. George’s, Westminster, was Mr Long’s seat At the general election in 1918 he polled 10,453 votes, Mr Mackenzie Bell (Liberal) receiving 1140. MEAT AND WOOL EFFECT OF HIGH FREIGHTS. THE WOOL PROFITS. (Special to Press Association.) LONDON, June 7. Messrs Long and Makgill, representing the meat producers of the Dominion gave evidence before the Imperial Shipping Board, giving facts and figures to show that high freights were making it impossible to ship some classes of meat. Mr Massey is concentrating his attention on the wool profits. He has prepared a statement of the Dominion’s claims as a result of conferences. This will now come before the authorities. FARROW’S BANK FAILURE.

OFFICIALS CHARGED WITH FRAUD. (Reuter’s Telegrams.) LONDON, June 6. (Received June 9, 1.25 a.m.) The trial of officials of Farrow’s Bank, which recently suspended payment, has opr ened. Farrow, Crotch and Hart are charged with conspiracy to defraud. Farrow and Crotch are also charged with publishing false statements of accounts, and Hart with aiding and abetting. All pleaded not guilty. The Attorney-General said that the bank’s deficiency was at least £2,000,000. It spent £9OOO a year on advertising, largely in religious publications, that the bank was solvent and prosperous.
