Sir Robert Stout has been created a Privy Councillor. Rev. Alfred Neild, of Dunedin, is at present on a visit to Winton. Senior Inspector T. K. Fleming has been appointed a member of the Council of Education by the Minister. A Sydney Press Association message records the death of the Rev. Jolls Rutledge, first president of the Methodist Conference of Australia. Mr C. E. Robertson, of the literary staff of the New Zealand Farmer, arrived in Invercargill las.t night by the second express, and is staying at the Grand Hotel. Brigadier-General Meldrum proposes to take up his residence at New Plymouth, and will probably practise his profeaaion as a solicitor. A Geneva Press Association me»saga states that the Hon. H. A. Milles Lake hart been appointed Secret ary -General of Um League of Red Cross Societies. The Southland Breeders’ Association hM written to the Southland A. and P. Association stating that the Shorthorn Shield competed for at the Summer Show has been awarded to Mr A. Campbell. The Public Service typewriting and shorthand examination, which is to be held i» the Technical College to-day, will be undjMP the supervision of Mr W. Broadbent, aasioted by Miss Constance Wilson. Jhe Hon. G. J. Anderson, Minister of bour and Mines, is attending the 60th anniversary of the discovery of payable gold te Tuapeka. He will afterwards proceed to Southland to visit the coal mines in Urt western district. Mr F. Parker, manager of the Bank of New South Wales at Dunedin, will leave shortly on a visit to Great Britain, which will extend over nine months. Mr C. W. 8. Cox, manager of the Geraldine branch, wil relieve Mr Parker during his absence. Mias Jean Graham has returned from India, where she has gjven some six years’ service as a missionary. Miss Graham is ai present on a year’s furlough, and is staying with her mother, Mrs John Graham, at Mataura Island. A very old and highly esteemed reeiednt of Eastern Bush in person of Mr Donald McLaren passed away last week at the ripe age of 71 years (says the Winton Record). He was a native of Perthshire, Scotland, and landed at Bluff in 1862. At the monthly meeting of the Southland A. and P. Association yesterday, the Hon. A. F. Hawke and Mr W. D. Hunt were appointed delegates to the annual conference of associations to be held ua Wellington on July 5. Messrs A. Campbell (president) and D. Cuthbertson (secretary) of the Southland A. and P. Association, were appointed delegates to the Otago and Southland A. and P. Associations’ Conference to be held at Dunedin during Winter Show Week. Mr Adam Hamilton has received word from the Minister of Mines, the Hon. G. J. Anderson, that he will arrive at Nightcape on Monday evening and proceed on Tuesday morning to inspect the Nightcaps and Ohai mines. Afterwards he intends visiting Riverton and Invercargill. “Cairo” Bradley arrived in Invercargill yesterday afternoon to open his local mission season. Mr Bradley was met at the station by a number of local ministers and by Mr A. Glass (president of the R.8.A.). He held a very successful meeting in the Grand Theatre last night.
