BOOT OPERATIVES

THE NEW AWARD. ALLEGATIONS AGAINST LOCAL FIRM. A meeting of the Southland branch of the Otago and Southland Boot Operatives’ Union was held last evening to discuss allegations made by members of the Union that a local firm when the award was announced called a “stop work” meeting and told the hands that, if the new wages were to be paid, the factory would be worked at half its usual strength. It was further alleged that one by one the workers were called into the manager’s office and there told that, unless they were agreeable to accept lower wages (as provided by the underrate workers’ clause of the Arbitration Court awards), they were liable to dismissal. It was stated that a few men accepted the ultimatum, but one, not being agreeable considered he was bound to cease work, which he did. The majority of the hands were not prepared to take any action until the Union considered the matter. So far as a reporter could gather, the decision reached was to stand by the award.
