It is believed that 800 Chinese w’ere drowned through the wreck of the British steamer Hong Moh on Lamock Island off Swatow. Two hundred and forty-eight peoHOSPITAL BOARD MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Southland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board yesterday was attended by the chairman, Mr J. Fleming and Messrs J. Matheson, H. E. Niven, J. McDougall, C. Robertson, T. Fraser, G. S. Eadie, T. Rhodes, J. Turnbull and Mrs Cruickshanks. EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE’S REPORT. The Committee reported having gone into the matter of the Board’s finances, and recommended that the Board’s levy on the local authorities for the ensuing year be at the same rate as at present and that all surplus over and above the ordinary maintenance requirements of the Board be invested in a building fund for the purpose of erecting additions to Gore Hospital and providing the extra money required for the in creased requirements of the Kew Hospital scheme, the Department's consent to this being done having been requested. The Committee had been advised that owing tc the meeting of Parliament this month, the Government Commission re hospital subsidies wc ild not sit until after Easter, and recommended that the secretary would represent the Board. The Town Committee had been directed to go into the question of the working conditions of nurses with the Medical Superintendent and Matron with a view of trying to evolve some scheme that would give the nursing staff certain time off duty apart from their annual holiday leave. The Committee had gone into the question of architect's fees and recommended that an agreement be prepared between the architect and the Board in connection with the preparing of plans, etc., in connection with the new hospital at Kew and remuneration in connection therewith, and that a payment on acount be made for the work already done. The report was adopted. SECRETARY’S REPORT. The secretary reported that during the month the fitting of the electric lift and alterations to operating block, Southland Hospital, had been completed, and a new coalshed had been built for the storage of coal, which, from April 1, it is proposed to purchase direct from the mine, when the present contract expired. It would be necessary to make arrangements for the cartaee of coal from the railway to the hospital. Although the Board had decided to hold over the building of the new hospital at Kew for some time, there w r as further draining and fencing requiring to be done, and some better arrangements should be made for the accommodation of the male staff than at present. He recommended that the chairman be authorised to have these different works carried out as far as possible before the winter. LORNE FARM. As authorised, a cream separator had been installed in the new dairy, along with the milking plant, and some arrangements would require to be made for supplying hot water to, and drainage in connection with the dairy. The report was adopted and a committee was appointed to inspect the Kew Hospital and the dairy at Lome Farm and to report to the Board in connection with the proposed improvements.
