THE PRESBYTERY

MONTHLY MEETING.

The monthly meeting of the Southland Presbytery was held yesterday morning in First Church hall The Rev. A. C. Wedderspoon’s term of office having expired the Rev. Robert Francis, Bluff, was appointed moderator for the current six months, and took the chair. A letter was received from the Rev. R. M. Ryburn, director of Youth of Church work, requesting a conference with the Presbytery with regard to Bible class matters. It was agreed to meet Mr Ryburn at the monthly meeting to be held on April 5. Another lengthy communication anent Sunday school examinations was referred to the Preebytenal Youth of the Church Committee to consider and report upon. Yet another item of correspondence was a letter from the Rev. George Budd, stating the financial requirements of the Home Mission Committee for the current year, a sum of £7700. Southland’s share of the liability he estimated at £643 IQs. The Revs. A. McNeur and Robert Morgan were appointed a committee of Presbytery to look into the matter and notify individual congregations of the amount expected of them. The Rev. A. Macdonald, Otautau, reported upon the Presbyterial visitation of Winton. The report was highly satisfactory, showing progress in all aspects of church life. The Rev. T. Tylee, Dipton, submitted what was also a satisfactory report on the Presbyterial visitation of Stewart Island parish. Applications for special Synod grants for £5OO from Winton in aid of manse building, and from Knox Church, Invercargill, for £250 for a building to be used as a Sunday school in Georgetown, were approved and sent on to Synod. A. call in favour of the Rev. John Chisholm from the Knox Church congregation signed by 142 members and 49 adherents was supported by Messrs Wilson, Galloway and Morrison. The call was sustained by Presbytery and intimation was made of Mr Chisholm’s acceptance. The induction was fixed for Thursday, March 31, at 730 p.m., the Rev. Rr Francis (moderator) to preside and induct, the Rev. D. Heggie to preach, the Rev. J. L. Robinson to address the minister, and the Rev. H. G. Gilbert the congregation .
