FIRE

NATIONAL MORTGAGE PREMISES AJjLAZE. Shortly after 3 o’clock this morning a fire broke out in the premises of the National Mortgage and Agency Company, Limited, in the Crescent, and quickly assumed serious dimensions. The flames were first noticed by a cleaner at the railway engine sheds, who communicated with the Fire Brigade. When the firemen got to work the blaze had involved the whole of the premises, and the entire building resembeld a furnace. When the Southland Times went to press the work of the Brigade had not begun to. make an impresion, and, fanned by a fresh westerly wind, the fire was threatening the building of the Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, adjoining.
