DRIED FRUITS
RE-EXPORT TO AMERICA. DIVERSION' OF AUSTRALIAN SHIPMENTS. (Special to the Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, September 20. The dried fruits, which have been imported into New Zealand for Dominion consumption, are likely to be re-shipped to America. High prices in America are the cause of this remarkable diversion of supplies. The fruit which is now changing hands for export at prices from 1/1 jd to 1/2 per lb is Australian fruit of a somewhat similar quality, which is worth at least 1/C per lb in America according to c.i.f. quotations received here. However, although Australian fruit is being re-shipped to America, supplies are also being imported from that country for the Christmas season. These will have to be eolii at record high prices. Yet, according to statements of men in the trade, a proportion of the cheaper Australian fruits is being sent away.
