It has been calculated (hat an acre of the best mussel ground will produce annually -KhOOOib of mussels, equivalent to 10,0001b of mussel moat, with a "fuel” value of 3,000,000 calories and a money value of about £250, says the Daily Ctironiele. This at a cost of no capital expenditure to speak of. and only such labour as is involved in transplanting to prevent- overcrowding and in gathering the crop. No system of cultivation of agricultural land can produce such value in tbr form of animal food. Tiie average yield in beef of an acre of average pasture land is reckoned to he 1001b, equivalent to 120,000 calories, and valued at about £S. Yet the demand for mussels is said to be greatly in excess of the supply.
