EXCITING EXPERIENCE

SHOPKEEPER’S ADVENTURE. DISTURBANCE AT SOUTH INVER,CARGILL. A South Invercargill storekeeper had an exciting experience on Saturday afternoon from widen he did not emerge scathless, while it is staled that his opponent left the Tray less eager than when he entered into it. The circumstances which led up to the Quarrel were unusual, and form the basis of an interesting stoiy. It appears that while the shopkeeper was busy attending to the wants of his customers on Saturday afternoon, he heard a woman’s cries foi help coming from a house on the opposite side of the street. He immediately went across to investigate, and found a man holding a woman by the throat,'apparently tlying to choke her. Coming up behind the man the storekeeper caught hold of him and held him until the woman got free. The storekeeper then returned to his work, but was followed by the man, who is stated to have been excited and using violent language. He followed the storekeeper behind tbs counter and caused a commotion by striking at him. At first the shopman tried the force of argument, but found it ineffective, and he received a black eye and a sore shoidder. The scene gradually shifted to the street in front of .the shop, and an eager crowd of children gathered to watch the proceedings. After a time the shopkeeper came into his own and caught his opponent a blow which considerably dampened his ardour and ended the bout.
