WORK AND WAGES

AFFAIRS IN NEW ZEALAND, AUCKLAND BUTCHERS’ STRIKE. EFFECT OF WELLINGTON AWARD. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, December 3. The decision of the Arbitration Court in the Wellington butchers’ dispute has been received in Auckland and the surprise for those interested is that by the motion of the Court it will apply to the four large centres. This changes the situation in regard to the butchers’ strike, as the award provides substantial increases in wages. The employers consider that no further conference is necessary, but point out that if the wages are acceptable it is open to the men to apply for reinstatement. WATERSIDERS’ CONFERENCE. NAPIER, December 3. The conference of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Federation resumed this morning. The reports of the committee were received and the president presented the annual report and his opening address. The secretary presented his annual report and the balance sheet and the discussion continued throughout the day. Mr W. J. Rogers was appointed minute secretary for the conference. TROUBLE AT KAITANGATA. THE “GO-SLOW” POLICY. DUNEDIN, December 3. Work was resumed at Kaitangata mine to-day but the mine manager was informed that at a meeting yesterday it was resolved to go-slow. It is stated that no reason is assigned by the men for their latest resolution.
