WORK ON MILK CARTS
CHILDREN EMPLOYED BEFORE SCHOOL. TRUANT OFFICER’S COMPLAINT. (Per United Press Association). DUNEDIN, August 21. At the meeting of the Education Board the Truant Officer reported that the practic* of employing children at such early hours in the morning as to interfere with their school work was increasing. He had written to the Minister of Education suggesting that a conference of Truant Officers should be held to bring the position before the Minister. Approximately 200 children of from 7 to 14 years, worked on milk carts for from two to five hours before attending school, their pay ranging from 3s 5d to 10s. The position was worse in Caversham, Green Island and North-East Valley. The Board decided to draw the attention of the Minister to the Department’s promise in 1918 that the subject would be taken up, and to ask what had been done.
