OUTBREAK IN SOUTH AFRICA. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, August 14. The Minister of Public Health has received a cable from South Africa stating that during the week ended August 9 there were 2468 cases of influenza and 129 deaths. It was stated also that there had been 14 deaths from smallpox and 20 from typhus, the last-named sickness being in inland districts. The Minister said to-day that the Acting Chief Health Officer had been instructed to take the matter in hand and a careful watch would be kept against the importation of infection of those diseases in New Zealand. He would ascertain what vessels were cn route or likely to come from South Africa to New Zealand.
