The strike postponment is explained by the fact that the Police Union leaders hope to receive the support of the Triple Alliance who hold a conference at Southport on May 24. They declare that if a strike is unavoidable it will be of the lightning order without notice. THE SEAMEN’S STRIKE. UNION CO.’S CREWS GIVE NOTICE. SYDNEY, June 3. A mass meeting of seamen passed a resolution against the secret ballot. The crew of the Union Company’s Wakatipu and Karitane have given 24 hours’ notice. It is anticipated that when the Manuka and MoeraJci arrive their crews will act similarly.; ACUTE COAL SHORTAGE IN MELBOURNE. MELBOURNE, June 3. If the strike of seamen lasts another fortnight, the coal shortage will be so acute that all exemptions granted on consumption will be curtailed. VICTORIAN SEAMEN IGNORE BALLOT. MELBOURNE, June 3. Received June 3, 9.55 p.m. Seamen are ignoring the ballot, the result of which will be announced on Thursday, when the enforcement of the coal restrictions will cause a number of factories to close. The conference meets on Friday. MANITOBAN UPHEAVAL. WINNIPEG COMPLETELY ISOLATED. TALK OF SOVIET GOVERNMENT. NEW YORK, May 21 (delayed). The New York Times’s Montreal correspondent states that the strike at Winnipeg has now spread until it includes every phase of industrial life. The policemen also threaten to walk out if the demands of the strikers are not granted. No trains are running in Winnipeg, and no telegraphs or telephones are working. The city has been practically isolated for many hours, and is without bread or milk. Business it at a standstill, and the newspapers are not published. The more radical elements declare that they will establish a Soviet Government and take control of property.
