MEAT CONGESTION
LOCAL FIRMS NOT AFFECTED. In view of the reported congestion in the Auckland frozen meat stores, a ’Hmes reporter made enquiries yesterday to see what are the conditions in Southland. The replies were reassuring. The manager of one of the local companies stated that no difficulty had been experienced by his firm —their only trouble was an inability to procure sufficient slaughtermen. Facing a shortage of feed, he said, fanners are hurrying their stock along to the freezing works. “It was predicted,” said this manager, “that the season would be a small one, but in our experience it has been better than last year.” He predicted that the Australian slaughtermen would once more find employment in New Zealand next year as native labour, at least under war conditions, had proved to be insufficient. So far as storage is concerned, he states that the Westmoreland is due to load carcases at Bluff next month. This should relieve us so much that we shall be able to work with clear decks up to the middle of June. I think the tonnage difficulties of the past year or two are over,” he declared.
