Mr F. Knight, late of the Invercargill and Dunedin Magistrate 'Court staffs, has been appointed Clerk of the Gore Court. News has been received that Dr Hugh John McCaw, M.D., F.R.C.S.E., second son of Mr H. and Mrs Jane McCaw, Grasmere (late of Anderson’s Bay and Mosgiel) has died of influenza and pneumonia, at Lambeth Infirmary, England. The deceased was a brother of Dr Alexander McCaw, of Invercargill, who is now with the R.A.M.C. in Flanders. On Sunday morning, in the Ross Chapel, the master of Knox College made reference to the death of Captain Jack Hewat, son of Mr E. C. Hewat, of Riverton, who was killed in action on the Bth inst. Hewat, the master said, came up from the Southland High School with a University National Scholarship, anjl entered as a student in Arts and Law. He secured the M.A. degree with honours in Latin and English, and the Tinline Scholarship in English, and thereafter went into camp. During a good part of his time in college he acted as organist at college prayers, and in the various activities of college and University life he took an active part. One year he edited the University Review. In the army fie rose to the rank af captain, and the last reference to him the master heard was-made a few weeks ago by a fellow student and offi■cer at present in New Zealand, who spoke appreciatively of the work Hewat was .doing, and the way he was getting on with his men. Last year, in the early part of October, Captain Hewat lost a brother at the war.
