NOTES BY SIR MODRED. The North Island racing season will be opened to-day with the Marton Jockey Club’s Spring fixture. The racing should prove interesting where well-tried horses are concerned, but many people will prefer to follow the performances of the novices, of whom there are an exceptionally large number concerned, engaged in the minor events. ‘ At Addington on Saturday last Our Thorpe was worked out over a "couple of half-miles, the first in Imin. 5 4-ssecs, and the second in Imin. 2 3-ssecs. Considering the track was slow, the efforts were recognised as full of merit. In speaking to the adoption of the report and balance-sheet at the annual meeting of members of the Wyndham Racing Club on Friday evening last the president (Mr E. J. Traynor) said that the profit on the past season amounted to £l3B. Analysing the items, he said that the receipts from the totalisator were £IOOO less than the previous year. The farm account showed a loss of £35. That was the equivalent of a cheap rent for the racecourse. There were 22 members on active service, of whom four had made the supreme sacrifice. That was 20 per cent, of the membership, and it spoke volumes for their patriotism. Private advice received in Wellington is .to the effect that the well-known jockey Luke Wilson continues to be seriously ill in. Christchurch, and the services of a throat specialist have been secured for him. At the annual meeting of the Wyndham Racing Club Messrs E. J. Traynor and John McGlinchey (the only nominations) were reelected president and vice-president respectively ; and the retiring members of Committee—Messrs W. A. Allison, Angus Campbell, J. Woods, J. H. Walker, and J. McDonald—were similarly re-elected. Mr I. G. Duncan, of Wellington, has purchased Bonny Helen, and the well-performed daughter of Boniform is now in the paddock at Waikanae. She Ls in foal to All Red and is to visit Bezonian. Jockey C. Emerson will not go to Australia this spring, and so far nothing has been definitely settled as to who will ride for Mr G. L. Stead at the A.J.C. Spring meeting. All Over and Detroit have been paid up for in both the principal flat races at the Marton meeting. The following recommendations to the executive were carried at the annual meeting of members of the Wyndham Racing Club: —That the executive consider the question of making a vote to the patriotic funds. —Tliat the lawn embankment be extended. It was pointed out that the work would cost about £OS, and that Mr J. McDonald would give the soil free if the proposal we.re carried out. —That the erection of permanent barriers be undertaken. Our Thorpe is to be held in readiness during the current week to attack the mile i record in the event of the Addington track ■ proving to he in good order, but, otherwise, I he will be railed down to Gore to take up j stud duties as from next week. A four-year-old sister to the pacer Cromstail was sent from Thnaru to join M. Edwards’s stable at New Brighton. At the Christchurch railway station the mare got j away from her attendant, and at latest advice was still at large. HOCKEY. To enable the selection of a primary | schools’ Southland representative team to j he made, it is hoped that as many players as ! possible belonging to the four teams will i artenrl at the Donn street ground on Sat- ; urday at 2 o’clock. | ====== j The Hon. G. W. Russell (Minister for j Public Health i referred on Tuesday to the | recent cable message which stated that Professor Lomonacko, Director of the ChetnicoPhysiological Institute of the University of Rome, was curing tuberculosis by means of saccharine solutions. This claim was considered so important, particularly in view of the fact that such large numbers of returned soldiers were infected with tuberculosis, that the Minister had a cable sent to the High Commissioner, London, for details of the treatment and of the results claimed. After much investigation on the other side of the world (said Mr Russell) the Secretary of State had informed the Gov-ernor-General that no reliable evidence had been received in regard to cures claimed for the new treatment, and that official support hud not been given yet to the Italian professor’s discovert'. Certain particulars would he scut on through the High Commissioner. "1 regret (he added i that the matter has not yet come to anything more definite, because it was hoped something practicable might arise from the discovery'. It is well known that saccharine solutions have been used —and I. believe rhat they are used now to some extent—but they cannot yet be regarded ns bringing the final treatment of this fell disease within practicable range. ’ ARE YOUR KIDNEYS IN BAD HEALTH?
